Our first morning in Phoenix, we woke up early (5 am) and headed up Camelback, a little mountain right in the middle of Phoenix. We had to go so early so we could beat the heat and the crowds.
There's no slackin' on vacation around here!
Will kept getting ahead and then had to wait at the turns for me. That's just how it is when we go skiing together! It drives him crazy.
The trail is only about a mile and a half, but you gain about 1000 feet in altitude. There's a lot of scrambling and it's not exactly easy.
I'm very proud of my team. There was minimal complaining, no bribery, and the kids were all at the top well before me!!
There's just something about climbing a mountain. Your goal is just sitting there right in front of you. And the sense of accomplishment is very gratifying. The hard work and sweat and fresh air seem to get rid of any attitude problems or bad moods. I'm glad my kids tolerate doing this every now and then!
Will spent the entire hike searching for lizards and snakes. He found this Chuckwalla in a rock on the way down.
On the way down, Will and I had a great conversation about snakes and Camelback and other hikers. He was very glad that the "camel" didn't have legs, and he thought that we would have a hard time getting up his back if he did!
Good job, Gaby!!
And this is a shot of Camelback as it looks from the Phoenix Airport tarmack. : )
