Last week they requested the kids ride their bikes to school. So we Scheers had to comply. I suppose we could have carried our bikes on the car and maybe parked closer to the schools, but oh no!! We were going to do it authentically. No cheating here.
I figure that it was about four miles from our condo to Will's school. We left the house at 7:15, giving us a full hour to get there. It took us an hour and a half. }: Oops!
We rode along the Yampa River Core Trail, which takes you all the way into town. It was freezing!
Once we (finally!) got there, you should have seen the sea of bicycles. This picture is only of Will's class.
They taught the kids hand signals, bike trail etiquette (like how to pass somebody on a horse, or a hiker), mountain biking skills, parking lot safety, road biking, etc...etc...
They also set up a computer kiosk at each of the schools for kids to log their miles and keep track of their carbon footprint. It was a very green event. They even had composting stations for our biodegradable popcicle sticks.
They also are working developing more bike trails with maps so that every child has a safe route to get to school.
It was totally cool!!
